The Soul of Coal

Dark seams lie deep beneath our feet
People roam carefree across a fresh green site
Looking at the past, happy in the sunlight

Memories are paraded to remind us of our heritage
Pride in local history – the testimony to lost & broken lives

The legacy of white finger & oxygen cylinders sit quietly at home
Tourists & children over the long dead roam

Stillness where once was energy & sweat
Hard work and hard conditions daily met
To fuel a nations hungry appetite
And then walk “haem” weary as black as night

My heart beats fast at Midnight

Days end brings the solace of a retreat to a warm safe comforting space
Clean sheets envelop a spirit fatigued by the tumult of the day
Stretching limbs seek the corners of the bed and sink seeking slumber
Weariness seems to offer a quick release to serenity

Then creeps the mind over incidents & comments
Nuances of the days activities review endlessly in loops of analysis
Probing, editing, replaying sights, sounds & feelings

Twisting & turning the body seeks to drive the thoughts away
Fold the pillow, fight the duvet, too hot, too cold
On my side, on my back, making a sleeping space like a dog in the long grass

Sleep fitful arrives without notice
The mind seeks other avenues to dissect the concerns idling by
Dreams, colours, adventures swirl images interrupting

A Sudden start awakes in cool blue darkness shapes changing as eyes clear

Seasons Hue

Salad days & heat haze stroke fond memories of days gone by
The smell of strawberries soft tastes of stolen kisses
Carefree moments of beaches and candyfloss return each year as the dew of spring passes from our lives

Sun burn & windbreaks pepper the landscape as a million bodies
sizzle in the noonday sun
Waves send children of all ages up the beach as the coolness engulfs their toes
Plans and aspirations mix with alcohol and passions flamed dreams too real & then forgotten on the plane

Romance and fruit machines vie for the attention of adolescents
Summers steamy infusion of heat, hormones and hay fever
paint a picture that blends over time
In the blink of an eye the clouds return & tennis lawns are neglected
to no-ones great surprise

Spring

Alone…
Dark….
Still…..
Cold….
Wet….
Dry…
Warm…
Stirring…
Energy….
Movement….
Growth….
Pushing….
Stretching…

Light…..
Wind….
Rain….
Energy…..
Energy…..
Growth….
Growth….
Sun….
Others….

Winter Walk

In misty car parks the quiet expectation builds
Straps tightened, boots laced provisions stored
The good intentions of the intrepid explorer lost in the contours concealed

Onwards & upwards then back to the start
Map upside down a straight line is an art
Fences, puddles and slippery slopes pose no barrier to the determined bloke

Fields ploughed neatly, stiles to cross
The winter chill held off by the exertion of lifting muddy boots up rocky outcrops
Push on past the big house to the sea, snag my trousers & twist my knee

Coastal path winds through the headland, deserted & cold
Gorse in bloom, a sign of seasons confused
Nearly home the hearth lights beckon a warm welcome awaits

Weary limbs, mask smug feelings of contentment
A comfy sofa soothes hot chocolate dreams
